Great Steamboats Sailing the Rivers of America

The great steam-powered showboats were the floating palaces of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many showboats were beautifully decorated and had theaters, galleries, ballrooms, and saloons. Showboats would announce their arrival by playing their organ-like steam calliope, which could be heard for miles.
